What is FIFA

FIFA, also known as FIFA Football or FIFA Soccer, is a series of video football games released annually by Electronic Arts as EA Sports. Although there were no major competitors when EA released the first games in the Madden NFL and NHL series, soccer video games such as Sensible Soccer, Kick Off and Match Day had been developed since the late 1980s, and were already competing in the gaming market when EA Sports announced a soccer game as the next addition to EA Sports.

When the series launched in late 1993, it was known for being the first to be officially licensed by FIFA, the world’s sporting governing body. The latest games in the series contain many exclusively licensed leagues, including leagues and teams from around the world, allowing the use of actual leagues, clubs and player names and likenesses in games, as well as internationally popular clubs from around the world, without the full leagues of those nations.

As of 2011, the franchise has been translated into 18 languages and is available in 51 countries. The series has sold more than 100 million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling video game sports franchise in the world, and one of the best-selling video game franchises. FIFA 12 also holds the record for “fastest selling sports game of all time” with over 3.2 million games sold, and over $186 million generated at retail in its first week of release.
